DRB MEDIA COMMUNICATIONS DIGITAL NEWS-NEWS BRIEF FOR SEPTEMBER 28, 2017-MIDLAND COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE PURCHASE NEW DEFENSIVE WEAPON

MIDLAND, TEXAS/SEPTEMBER 28, 2017 – THE MIDLAND COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE HAS PURCHASED THE JPX CENTURION L.E. PEPPER SPRAY GUN. THIS LESS THAN LETHAL SPRAY GUN IS ANOTHER TOOL AVAILABLE TO DEPUTIES IN CONTROLLING A SUSPECT. THE PEPPER SPRAY GUN IS ONE LEVEL ABOVE A VERBAL COMMAND, AND WILL WORK ON ANYONE.
(SHERIFF GARY PAINTER, MIDLAND COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE)
“WE DON’T WANT TO SHOOT ANYBODY. WE DON’T WANT TO HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO SHOOT SOMEBODY. WHEN IT STARTS ESCALLATING AND PEOPLE YELLING AND SCREAMING AND HOLLERING. WE’RE GONNA STOP IT, AND STOP IT QUICK. AND THIS COULD BE USED IN A JAIL SETTING AND IT WILL NOT HARM ANYONE ELSE. IT WILL ONLY AFFECT THE PERSON THAT’S SHOT.”
THE PEPPER SPRAY GUN SHOOTS A SHOTGUN BLAST OF PEPPER SPRAY OUT AT APPROXIMATLEY 4O5 MILES PER HOUR AND CAN REACH A SUSPECT AT ABOUT 23 FEET AWAY. AFTER AN OFFICER TAGS A SUSPECT WITH THE PEPPER SPRAY, THE OFFICER CAN WALK UP TO HIM AND CUFF HIM, WITHOUT CROSS CONTAMINATION OR SMELL FROM THE SPRAY.
(DARRON TEETERS, VICE PRESIDENT., SALES AND TRAINING, JPX AMERICA, INC.)
“IT’S DESIGNED TO INCAPACITATE A SUSPECT AND HOLD THEM STILL FOR ABOUT AN HOUR.”
WEST TEXAS WEATHER CAN BE PROBLIMATIC, WHEN AN OFFICER HAS APPROXIMATELY FIVE SECONDS TO MAKE A DECISION WHEN CONFRONTING A SUSPECT, AND USING AN ELECTRICAL WEAPON. CHANGING WIND DIRECTIONS CAN KEEP THE PROBS FROM ATTATCHING TO THE SUSPECT OR IEFFECTIVE IF SOMEONE IS UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF DRUGS OR ALCOHOL.
(DARRON TEETERS, VICE PRESIDENT., SALES AND TRAINING, JPX AMERICA, INC.)
“IF I HAD FOUR PEOPLE HERE AND, I SAID, PUT YOUR HANDS BEHIND YOUR BACK, AND I HAD TO DEPLOY MY ELECTRICAL WEAPON; HE WOULD STIFFEN UP AND GO DOWN, AND IF SOMEONE ELSE CAME AT ME, I WOULD HAVE TO PRESS A BUTTON PUT ON TURN ON ANOTHER CARTRIDGE…”
DURING THE CLASSROOM TRAINING SESSION OFFICERS AND REPRESENTATIVES OF JPX AMERICA, INC., DISSCUSED THE CHALLENGES AND ISSUES OFFICERS ENCOUNTER WHEN OUT IN THE FIELD. THEN OFFICERS WENT OUTDOORS ANDTRAINED WITH THE JPX AMERICAN CENTURION L.E. PEPPER SPAY GUN. OFFICERS THEN APPLIED THE PEPPER SPARY LIQUID ON AREAS OF THEIR FACES TO EXPERIENCE THE POTENCY OF THE SPRAY.
THE MIDLAND COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE INVESTED FORTY-FIVE HUNDRED DOLLARS FROM THE DONATION FUND TO PURCHASE THREE PEPPER SPRAY GUNS
(SHERIFF GARY PAINTER, MIDLAND COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE)
“THE COST FOR THIS PARTICULAR ITEM ISLESS THAN A TASER. AND THE RELOADS THAT WE’RE GONNA GET IS LESS THAN THE RELOADS FOR THE TASER. SO, WE’RE GONNA SAVE MONEY. IT WILL BE EFFECTIVE ON INDIVIDUALS NO MATTER, WHETHER THEY’RE UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF NARCOTICS OR ALCOHOL OR WHAT THEY’RE UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF WILL WORK.”
ABOUT 2000 LAW ENFORCEMENT DEPARTMENTS AROUND THE UNITED STATES USE THIS MODEL OF THE PEPPER SPRAY GUN. AUSTRAILIA IS CONSIDERING USING THIS LESS THAN LETHAL TOOL.
