(KATIE NISBET, ASSOCIATE DEAN OF ACADEMIC PARTNERSHIPS-ODESSA COLLEGE)
“MEDICAL CENTER HOSPITAL IS ONE OF THE FIRST BUSINESSES TO REALLY REACH OUT AND MAKE THAT COMMITMENT TO BEING PART OF THIS EFFORT FOR THE FOLLOWING SCHOOL YEAR.”
MEDICAL CENTER HOSPITAL WILL BE REACHING OUT TO MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS AND EXPOSE STUDENTS A WIDE VARIETY OF OPTIONS IN THE MEDICAL FIELD, AS WELL AS PROVIDE TOURS OF THE HOSPITAL.
(KATIE NISBET, ASSOCIATE DEAN OF ACADEMIC PARTNERSHIPS-ODESSA COLLEGE)
“CHILDREN DON’T KNOW REALLY WHAT THEY WANT TO DO. A LOT OF THAT HAS TO DO WITH THE FACT THAT THEY’RE NOT EXPOSED TO DIFFERENT THINGS. SO, MAYBE YOUR PASSION IS GOING TO BE WORKING IN RADIOLOGY, BUT IF YOU’VE NEVER EVEN SEEN WHAT AN X-RAY LOOKS LIKE OR HOW YOU GO ABOUT TAKING ON. IT’S HARD TO REALLY KNOW IF THAT’S SOMETHING YOU’D REALLY BE INTERESTED IN.”
MEDICAL CENTER HOSPITAL AND ODESSA COLLEGE HAVE BEEN TRAINING A STAFF OF 65 PEOPLE AND PREPARING THE STAFF TO APPROPRATELY GO INTO THE SCHOOL SYSTEM.
(RICK NAPPER, CEO/PRESIDENT-MEDICAL CENTER HOSPITAL)
“WHAT WE HAVE TO DO AS MEDICAL CENTER IS TO GO INTO THESE SCHOOLS, FIRST OF ALL, EXPLORE THAT TALENT AND FIND OUT WHERE THAT TALENT IS. AND THEN, SECOND OF ALL, WE HAVE TO HELP THEM UNDERSTAND THEIR TALENT AND BRING IT TO THE FOREFRONT. THERE ARE MANY PEOPLE TRYING TO INFLUENCE OUR CHILDREN, MANY OF THEM IN A NEGATIVE WAY; WE HAVE TO COUNTER THAT WITH A POSITIVE OF LETTING THEM KNOW WHO THEY ARE AND BUILD THEIR SELF-ESTEEM AROUND THEIR ABILITIES OF WHAT THEY CAN BE AND WHAT THEIR ABILITIES ARE.”
ODESSA COLLEGE AND MEDICAL CENTER HOSPITAL ARE EXCITED THAT THE COMMUNITY AND COMMUNITY LEADERS ARE ENGAGING IN THE BETTERMENT OF THE EDUCATION SYSTEM AND IMPACT IT WILL HAVE IN THE FUTURE OF THE PERMIAN BASIN.
(RICK NAPPER, CEO/PRESIDENT-MEDICAL CENTER HOSPITAL)
“WE HAVE CHILDREN WITH THE MOST AMAZING ABILITY TO BECOME PROFESSIONALS IN THIS COMMUNITY AND DEVELOP IT. AND MY FEELING IS WHY GO OUTSIDE OF THE COMMUNITY, WHEN WE COULD DEVELOPE IT FROM WITHIN.”
ODESSA COLLEGE IS ALSO REACHING OUT TO LOCAL ORGANIZATIONS TO HELP CREATE AND PROMOTE A COLLEGE GOING CULTURE IN THE PERMIAN BASIN.

THE ROAD CLOSURE WOULD BE AVENUE G, FROM AVENUE F, WEST OF FM 1601. THE COUNTY WOULD PROVIDE A DETOUR TRAFFIC CONTROL DEVICE TO GET THE RESIDENTS TO THEIR PROPERTIES. CURRENTLY THE ROADWAY IS UNUSED AND COSTING THE COUNTY NEEDED FUNDS FOR OTHER ROADWAYS AND CAUSING SAFETY ISSUES TO THE ONLY TWO RESIDENTS OF THAT AREA.
(EVANS KESSEY, DIRECTOR OF HIGHWAYS AND STREETS-ECTOR COUNTY)
“THE CONDITION OF THE ROADWAY RIGHT NOW IS NOT WARRANTED TO THE SAFETY OF THE PEOPLE LIVING IN THAT AREA, AS A RESULT, A LOT OF TRUCK COMPANIES ARE USING THAT ROAD CURRENTLY AS A MEANS OF TRAINING STUDENTS TO OBTAIN THEIR CDL DRIVER LICENSE, AND I BELIEVE IT’S CAUSING A LOT OF ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES TO THE RESIDENTS OF THAT ARE LIVING IN THAT AREA.”
EVANS KESSEY THE DIRECTOR OF HIGHWAYS AND STREETS IN ECTOR COUNTY PRESENT TO THE COMMISSIONERS COURT THE NEED OF A FOUR WAY STOP SIGN AT THE INTERSECTION OF 64TH AND CYPRESS IN WEST ECTOR COUNTY. THERE HAVE BEEN SEVERAL MAJOR CRASHES AT THAT INTERSECTION OVER THE LAST 3 YEARS THAT IS CAUSING A CONCERN WITH ONE RESIDENT.
(RENE VASQUEZ, RESIDENT OF AT THE CORNER OF 64TH & CYPRESS-WEST ECTOR COUNTY)
“THERE’S A LOT OF PEOPLE THAT DON’T RESPECT THAT STOP SIGN, AND THERE’S A LOT OF PEOPLE THAT DON’T RESPECT THE SPEED LIMIT ON THIS ROAD”
RENE VASQUEZ, WHO LIVES AT THE CORNER OF 64TH AND CYPRESS SAYS HE’S GLAD TO HAVE INSURANCE, BUT DOSEN’T KNOW HOW MUCH IT’S GOING TO COST TO FIX THE DAMAGE TO HIS PROPERTY FROM LAST WEEK’S CAR CRASH.
(RENE VASQUEZ, RESIDENT OF AT THE CORNER OF 64TH & CYPRESS-WEST ECTOR COUNTY)
‘I’M GLAD I HAVE INSURANCE, BUT STILL. THE LAST TIME, I ASK MY INSURANCE AGENT HOW MUCH IT COSTS. IT WAS ABOUT 14. 14 THOUSAND. I DON’T KNOW HOW MUCH THIS IS GOING TO BE.”
(EVANS KESSEY, DIRECTOR OF HIGHWAYS AND STREETS-ECTOR COUNTY)
“THE LAW PROVIDES THAT YOU HAVE BEEN IN A SERIES OF ACCIDENTS AT THAT INTERSECTION. IT IS IMPORTANT IN COMMISSIONER’S COURT VOTE ON THE NECESSARY NEED FOR US TO PUT UP TRAFFIC CONTROL DEVICES TO ADDRESS THE ISSUE.”
“THE IMMEADATE ACTION TO PUT UP A FOUR WAY STOP SIGN IS IMPORTANT TO ADDRESS THE SAFETY OF THE PEOPLE OUT THERE.”
THE ECTOR COUNTY COMMISSIONERS COURT ALSO HEARD A REQUEST BY THE DIRECTOR OF HIGHWAYS AND STREETS IN ECTOR COUNTY TO FORM A COMMITTEE TO REVIEW THE TRANSPORTATION NEEDS AND ISSUES OF THE COUNTY.
(GREG SIMMONS, ECTOR COUNTY COMMISSIONER, PCT. 2)
“A LOT OF TIMES WITH A COMMITTEE. I DON’T WANT THEM TO SPEND A LOT OF WORK TO BRING US A REPORT THAT WE CAN’T FUND. AND AGAIN, WE ARE STILL VERY LIMITED ON FUNDING ON WHAT WE CAN PAY FOR EACH YEAR WITH THE ROADS. AND SO, IF THE COMMITTEE DOES A LOT OF WORK COMES BACK, ‘YEAH, WE’VE GOT 30 MILLION DOLLARS OF ROAD REPAIRS WE’RE HIGHLIGHTING HERE, AND WE CAN ONLY AFFORD TEN. THEN, I FEEL LIKE, THEY’VE PUT IN A LOT OF WORK FOR NOTHING.
