(CRISTINA GONZALEZ, 7TH GRADE READING TEACHER, ECTOR MIDDLE SCHOOL)

“WE NEEDED TO START A RPOGRAM AT IN SCHOOL WHERE WE CAN MEET ALL THE NEEDS OF OUR STUDENTS AND HUNGAR IS ONE OF THE NEEDS THAT NEEDED TO BE MET.”

COMPLEX COMMUNITY CREDIT UNION ALONG WITH STUDENTS FROM OHS PREPARED OVER 11,000 MEALS IN OCTOBER 2017. THIS EVENT IS A LESSON FOR STUDENTS AND IS PART OF A PROGRAM DEVELOPED BY COMPLEX COMMUNITY CREDIT UNION CALLED “PAY IT FORWARD.”

(JASON BERRIDGE, PRESIDENT/CEO, COMPLEX COMMUNITY CREDIT UNION)

“THERE’S A STATISTIC THAT ONE IN THREE KIDS HAVE SOME SORT OF FOOD INSECURITY AND THAT’S WHERE WE GOT STARTED WITH OUR “IMPACT HUNGER”, A COUPLE OF YEARS AGO. THIS EVENT IS PART OF A BIGGER EVENT, WHICH WE FED OVER 60,000 PEOPLE OVER THE PERMIAN BASIN IN ALL THE COMMUNITIES WHERE WE HAVE BRANCHES.”

THE UP AND DOWN CYCLE OF THE OIL ECONOMY IN THE ODESSA AREA CAN HAVE A NEGATIVE AFFECT ON THE STUDENTS OF ECISD SCHOOL DISTRICT.

(ROY GARCIA, ASSISTANT SUPERINDENDENT, SECONDARY SCHOOLS, ECISD)

“WHEN WERE OIL BASED ECONOMY, THE PEOPLE THAT ARE MAKING THE MONEY ARE MAKING BIG MONEY. THE PEOPLE THAT AREN’T, IT’S TOUGH TO COMPETE, ‘CAUSE HOUSING IS EXPENSIVE, FOOD. EVERYTHING IS A LOT MORE EXPENSIVE THE OTHER PEOPLE ARE MAKING GOOD MONEY. SO, I WILL SAY TIPICALLY FOR OUR DISTRICT, ABOUT HALF OUR KIDS ARE AT FREE AND REDUCED, BUT THE REAL NUMBER ARE LARGER THAN THAT. ‘CAUSE THE KIDS AND PARENTS DON’T FILL OUT THE APPLICATION.

THE ECTOR MIDDLE SCHOOL FOOD PANTRY RECIEVES FOOD CONTRIBUTIONS FROM THE WEST TEXAS FOOD BANK AND NEW PANTRIES WILL OPEN AT BONHAM AND AT THE ALTERNATIVE CENTER.
