“THE ESCOVADER WAS USING THE BIG SHOVEL AS IT REACHED IN BROUGHT OUT A LOAD OF DIRT. WE HAD TWO DEPUTIES SITTING ON THE SIDE WITH BINOCULARS WATCHING. HE OBSERVED A SKULL ROLL DOWN FROM WHERE THE SHOVEL HAD PICKED UP. WE HALTED EVERYTHING AND STOPPED IT. WENT DOWN AND MADE SURE THAT IT WAS, AND IT DEFINITELY WAS. WE NOFIFIED A JUSTICE OF THE PEACE, DAVID COBOS FROM PRICINCT 2; HE CAME OUT AND PRONOUNCED THE BODY DEAD AND ORDERED AN AUTOPSY.”

DISTRICT ATTORNEY LAURA NODOLF WAS IN CONTACT WITH THE FORENSIC ANTHROPOLOGIST AT THE TARRANT COUNTY MEDICAL EXAMINER’S OFFICE AND ASSISTED LOCAL AUTHORITIES WITH THE PROPER REMOVAL OF THE SKELETAL REMAINS.

“THIS PARTICULAR BODY, HAD SOME SOFT TISSUE LEFT. IT HAD SOME SKIN LEFT ON THE FINGER PRINTS THAT WERE MOIST. THERE SOME TINDONS AND SOME OTHER SOFT TISSUE THAT WAS RECOVERED THAT WAS SENT WITH THE BODY TO THE TARRANT COUNTY MEDICAL EXAMINERS.”

THE SOFT TISSUE WILL AID IN THE IDENTIFICATION OF THE REMAINS THROUGH DNA.

“THIS PARTICULAR LOCATION, WHERE YOU HAVE A PIT LIKE THAT. THERE WAS NO MOISTER IN THE PIT. THERE WAS NO RAIN, THERE’S NO WATER. WHERE WE FOUND MOISTURE, WE FOUND THAT THERE WAS DECOMPOSITION FROM BRANCHES AND LEAVES AND SUCH AS THAT. THAT LEFT SOME MOISTURE, BUT CREATED HEAT. IN THAT PIT THERE IS A TREMENDOUS AMOUNT OF DRY DIRT, THAT WAS ON TOP OF IT. THAT DRY DIRT SEALED THE BODY. AND THAT’S WHAT HELPED PRESERVE TH SKIN. SO WE’RE VERY THANKFUL, VERY LUCKY, THAT, THAT OCCURRED.”
