DRB MEDIA COMMUNICATIONS DIGITAL NEWS-(022118-B)-EDUCATION PARTNERSHIP MEETING

ODESSA, TEXAS/FEBRUARY 21, 2018 – THE EDUCATION PARTNERSHIP HELD IT’S SECOND MEETING AT THE COMPLEX COMMUNITY CREDIT UNION TRAINING CENTER. THE PARTNERSHIP IS COMPRISED OF BUSINESS OWNERS, RELIGIOUS LEADERS, EDUCATORS, AND LOCAL NON-PROFIT AND LOCAL GOVERNMENT AGENCIES. THE GOAL OF THE EDUCATION PARTNERSHIP IS TO BRING A SYSTEMIC CHANGE AND IMPROVE EDUCATION IN ECTOR COUNTY AND THOUGHOUT THE PERMIAN BASIN.

(LORAINE PERRYMAN, CHAIR-EDUCATION PARTNERSHIP)

“THE COLLECTIVE IMPACT MODEL IS A PROVEN METHOD OF MOBILIZING CHANGE IN A COMMUNITY, AND IT DOSEN’T JUST HAVE TO BE EDUCATION AND IT IS USED IN OTHER PARTS OF THE COUNTRY. WE ARE UTILIZING THIS MODEL IN ODESSA TO AFFECT CHANGE IN OUR EDUCATION, BECAUSE IN RESENT STUDIES THAT HAVE BEEN DONE, THE BIGGEST DEPREMENT TO OUR ECONOMIC GROWTH AND PROSPERITY IN ODESSA IS THE POOR PERFORMANCE OF OUR PUBLIC SCHOOLS.”

THE MEETING OPENED WITH A STUDENT PERFORMANCE ANALYSIS FROM THE 2016—2017 ECISD SCHOOL YEAR. THE PRESENTATION INCLUDED DATA IN THE FORM OF BAR GRAPHS THAT REFLECTED THE UNDERPERFORMANCE OF STUDENTS IN THE SCHOOL DISTRICT.

(JENNIFER HURD, CONSULTANT)

“THE UNDERPERFOMANCE HAS BEEN GOING ON FOR A WHILE. AND FORTUNATELY, IT SEEMS TO BE IMPROVING, AT LEAST IN THE LAST YEAR. HOPEFULLY, THAT IMPROVEMENT WILL COUNTINUE INTO 2018, BUT IT’S SOMETHING, THAT I THINK THE COMMUNITY IS WILLING AND HIGHLY INTERESTED IN ADDRESSING.”

A SUB GOAL OF THE EDUCATION PARTNERSHIP IS TO RAISE THE EDUCATION LEVEL BASED ON: “FROM THE CRADLE TO CAREER” CONCEPT. HOWEVER, THERE ARE CULTURAL ATTITUDES AMONG HISPANICS STUDENTS IN THE SECONDARY SCHOOLS, WHERE, THE STUDENT REFUSES TO ACKNOWLEGE THE VALUE OF AN EDUCATION.

(ADRIAN VEGA, Ed.D., CHIEF PEOPLE OFFICER, SEWELL FAMILY OF COMPANIES)

“AT THE END OF DAY, EVERYBODY IS GOING TO HAVE TO MAKE THEIR OWN CHOICE, BUT AS AN INSTITUTION, AS A COMMUNITY, I DO THINK IT’S OUR RESPONSIBILITY TO CONTRIBUTE TO THE ENVIRONMENT IN SUCH A WAY, THAT WE’RE CREATING A COMMUNITY, A SPACE WHERE EVERYBODY HAS AN OPPORTUNITY TO SUCCEED IF THEY WANT TO.”

STUDENTS THAT ARE COMING FROM OTHER PARTS OF THE WORLD TO THE ECISD SCHOOL DISTRICT HAVE NO COMPREHENSION OF THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE AND FAIL AT TAKING THE STAAR TEST. THIS IS CAUSING A DIP IN THE TEST SCORES.

(THOMAS CROWE, SUPERINTENDENT, ECTOR COUNTY INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT)

“WE HAVE WHAT WE CALL AN EARLY EXIT MODEL, WHERE THEY START IN BI-LINGUAL AND THEN WE GRADUALLY MOVE THEM TOWARD ENGLISH AND ‘CAUSE WE KNOW THEY ARE GOING TO HAVE TO TAKE THAT TEST IN ENGLISH, AND OF COURSE, THE PARENTS WHO COME HERE, THEY WANT THEIR CHILDREN TO LEARN ENGLISH, BECAUSE THEY’RE GONNA BE SUCCESSFUL AND MORE SUCCESSFUL IF THE KNOW BOTH LANGUAGES, AND SO YOU KNOW, WE MOVE OUR CHILDREN TOWARD THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE, SO THEY CAN BE READY TO TAKE THE TEST.”

MEMBERS OF THE EDUCATION PARTNERSHIP ENGAGED IN AN ACTIVITY TO HELP DEFINE THE ORGANIZATION’S VISION, GUIDANCE, LEADERSHIP AND PROCESS IN A COLLECTIVE EFFORT TO ELEVATE THE EDUCTION IN ECTOR COUNTY.
