DRB MEDIA COMMUNICATIONS DIGITAL NEWS-1ST PUBLIC HEARING-PROPOSED ECTOR COUNTY PROPERTY TAX INCREASE

ODESSA, TEXAS, AUGUST 25, 2017 – THE ECTOR COUNTY COMMISSIONERS COURT HELD THE FIRST OF TWO PUBLIC HEARINGS TO GET INPUT FROM COUNTY RESIDENTS REGARDING THE PROPOSED PROPERTY TAX INCREASE.

THE FIRST PUBLIC HEARING WAS SHORT IN DURATION, DUE TO NONE RESPONSE FROM THOSE THAT ATTENED THE MEETING.

(RUSS WRIGHT, RESIDENT OF ECTOR COUNTY PCT 4)

“I’M DISAPOINTED THAT NO ONE ELSE SHOWED-UP, I FIGURED IT WOULD BE A FULL…I FIGURED THAT THERE WOULD BE A LOT OF PEOPLE HERE.

ECTOR COUNTY JUDGE RON ECKERT STATED THAT THE COUNTY RESIDENTS UNDERSTAND WHY THERE’S A NEED TO RAISE COUNTY TAXES.

ECTOR COUNTY RESIDENT, RUSS WRIGHT ATTENDED THE PUBLIC HEARING AND SAID THAT IT’S BETTER TO BE AND EDUCATED VOTER, BEFORE VOICING HIS OPINION ON THE TAX INCREASE, BUT FEELS THAT, MORE FOCUS ON THE BUDGET IS NEEDED BY THE COMMISSIONERS COURT.

(RUSS WRIGHT, RESIDENT OF ECTOR COUNTY PCT 4)

“I DON’T SEE IT AS A INCOME PROBLEM; I SEE IT AS A SPENDING PROBLEM, THEY NEED TO LOOK A THE BUDGET BETTER AND SEE WHAT WE CAN SQUEEZE OUT OF THE BUDGET, AND MAYBE WE DON’T NEED A ZAMBONI.”

THERE ARE STRATEGIES BEING CONSIDERED BY THE ECTOR COUNTY COMMISSIONER THAT WOULD SHIFT THE TAX BURDEN AWAY FROM THE PROPERTY OWNER. ONE OF THE STRATEGIES WILL BE ON THIS NOVEMBER BALLOT.

(RON ECKERT, ECTOR COUNTY JUDGE)

“WE HAVE STRATEGIES FOR SHIFTING THE PROPERTY TAX BURDEN IN THE SHORT AND THE LONG TERM, FROM THE PROPERTY OWNER TO THE CONSUMER IN THE FORM OF A SALES TAX, THAT’S SOMETHING THAT WE’RE TRYING TO GET ACCOMPLISHED.”

THE SECOND PUBLIC HEARING WILL BE HELD ON MONDAY, AUGUST 28, 2017 AT 6PM AT THE ECTOR COUNTY COMMISSIONERS’ COURTROOM AT THE ECTOR COUNTY ADMINISTRATION BUILDING. ROOM 120 LOCATED AT 1010 EAST 8TH STREET IN ODESSA, TEXAS.
