DRB MEDIA COMMUNICATIONS DIGITAL NEWS-NEWS BRIEF (102617)-ZOMBEE FLY

ODESSA, TEXAS/OCTOBER 26, 2017/ECISD – THE ECISD INNOVATION DEPARTMENT INTRODUCED TO ECISD STUDENTS ANOTHER PICK EDUCATION EXPERIENCE.

(JASON OSBORNE, CHIEF INNOVATION OFFICER-ECISD)

“PICK EDUCATION BRINGS REAL WORLD EXPERIENCES INTO THE CLASSROOM, AND BY DOING THAT WE INVITE RESEARCHERS THAT ARE DOING REALLY EXTRAORDINARY RESEARCH, INTERESTING RESEARCH.”

  1. JOHN HAFERNIK, EMERITUS PROFESSOR OF BIOLOGY AT SAN FRANCISCO STATE UNIVERSITY, PRESENTED A LECTURE AND MEDIA PRESENTATION TO MIDDLE SCHOOL, AND SOME HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS ON “BEES, ZOMBEES AND CITIZEN SCIENCE”.

(DR. JOHN HAFERNIK, EMERITUS PROFESSOR OF BIOLOGY, SAN FRANCISCO STATE UNIVERSITY)

“SO, I TALK TO THEM ABOUT ZOMBEES, BUT NOT THE ZOMBIES WE SEE ON CABLE T.V. AND SO ON. BUT THE ZOMBEES THAT ARE INFECTED HONEY BEE THAT ACT STRANGELY. AND ACT LIKE THEY’VE BEEN ZOMBIEFIED, FLYING OUT OF THEIR HIVES AT NIGHT, BEING ATTRACTED TO LIGHT, THEN BEING KILLED BY THIS LITTLE FLY, THE ZOMBEE FLY, THAT LITERALLY EATS THE INSIDE OUT OF THE BEE, EVENTUALLY.”

SERVERAL YEARS AGO, DR. HAFERNIK, ALONG WITH SOME OF HIS STUDENTS DISCOVERED THAT DISORIENTED BEES WERE BEING PARASITIZED BY THE ZOMBIES FLY – APOCEPALUS BOREALIS, A NATIVE FLY THAT ALSO PARASITIEZES BUMBLE BEES AND YELLOW JACKET AND WASPS.

(DR. JOHN HAFERNIK, EMERITUS PROFESSOR OF BIOLOGY, SAN FRANCISCO STATE UNIVERSITY)

“THE ZOMBEE FLIES ARE POTENTIALLY A THREAT TO HONEY BEES AS THE IMPORTANT POLLENATORS AS THEY ARE IN OUR AGRICULTURAL SYSTEM.”

THE ZOMBIE FLY CAUSES A NEGATIVE IMPACT ON AGRICULTURE BY INFECTING A VARIETY OF NATIVE BEES, THIS NEGATIVE IMPACT WILL CAUSE AN INCREASE ON THE PRICE OF FOOD AT THE GROCERY STORE.

(DR. JOHN HAFERNIK, EMERITUS PROFESSOR OF BIOLOGY, SAN FRANCISCO STATE UNIVERSITY)

“WE HAVE LOTS OF DIFFERENT NATIVE BEES, BUT THE HONEY BEE IS THE MAIN ONE THAT GETS USED FOR MANY OF OUR AGRIGULTURAL CROPS, AND SO, IF THE ZOMBEE FLIES CAUSE HIVES TO FAIL, THEN THAT MEANS THAT FEWER OF THEM POLLINATE CROPS, THAT MEANS FAMERS HAVE TO PAY MORE FOR THEIR HONEY BEES THAT THEY BRING IN TO POLLINATE THEIR CROPS, AND EVENTUALLY IT MEANS OUR FOOD COSTS MORE.”

  1. JOHN HAFERNICK SAYS THERE ARE THOUSANDS OF CITIZEN SCIENCE PROJECTS, THAT ANYONE CAN GET INVOLVED WITH. HE ENCOURAGES ALL STUDENTS OF ECISD TO GET INVOLVED IN THESE SCIENCE PROJECTS.

(DR. JOHN HAFERNIK, EMERITUS PROFESSOR OF BIOLOGY, SAN FRANCISCO STATE UNIVERSITY)

“AND A LOT OF WHAT WE KNOW OF THE NATURAL WORLD COMES FROM NON-PROFESSIONAL SCIENTIST, WHO MADE OBSERVATIONS AND CONTRIBUTED TO WHAT WE KNOW. IF THEY GO TO A WEBSITE THAT’S CALLED SCISTARTER (FULL PAGE GRAPHIC) THEY CAN PICK FROM LITERALLY TWO-THOUSAND DIFFERNET CITIZEN SCIENCE PROJECTS, SO, THEY CAN HELP ANSWER REALLY IMPORTANT SCIENTIFIC QUESTIONS, AND REALLY BECOME SCIENTISTS THEMSELVES.”

SEVERAL TEACHER AND ADMINISTRATORS AND CIRRICULEM COORDIANTOR TOOK A TWO DAY A TRIP TO BIG BEND TO STUDY THE BOLOGY THE AREA.

(JASON OSBORNE, CHIEF INNOVATION OFFICER-ECISD

“IT’S EASIER TO ROLL THIS INTO THE CLASSROOM, BECAUSE THEY ARE LEARNING FROM THE MASTER IN THAT PARTICULAR AREA OF SCIENCE RESEARCH. THE KID’S GRASP WITH THE ENGAGEMENT PIECE, THEN THEY CAN WORK TOGETHER TO PROBLEM SOLVE TO DO RESEARCH IN THE CLASSROOM.”
