I’M VIRIDIANA MARQUEZ WITH DRB MEDIA COMMUNICATIONS DIGITAL NEWS. THE ODESSA POLICE DEPARTMENT HAD THEIR 10 YEAR REMEMBRANCE CEREMONY TO HONOR THREE FALLEN OFFICERS.  AND DANNY BARRERA HAS THE STORY.

ON FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 8, 2017 THE COMMUNITY OF ODESSA JOINED WITH THE ODESSA POLICE DEPARTMENT FOR THE 10 YEAR REMEMBRANCE OF CORPORAL ARLIE JONES, CORPORAL JOHN GARDNER, AND CORPORAL ABEL MARQUEZ. THE THREE OFFICERS WERE FATALLY SHOT BY LARRY NEIL WHITE DURING A DOMESTIC VIOLENCE CALL, SEPTEMBER 8, 2007.

(BOBBY BLAND, ECTOR COUNTY DISTRICT ATTORNEY)

“WELL, MY GREATEST REGRET IN LIFE, IS THAT I NEVER GOT TO GET HIM IN COURT TO TRY HIM AND HOLD HIM ACCOUNTABLE IN COURT. HE GOT TOO SICK FROM CANCER, BEFORE WE COULD DO ANYTHING ON THE CASE. I REALLY WISH WE COULD HAVE HELD HIM ACCOUNTABLE, AND HAD HIM FOUND GUILTY, BUT IN THE END HE DIED IN JAIL WHERE HE BELONGS.”

(CHIEF MICHAEL GERKE, ODESSA POLICE DEPARTMENT)

“WE LOST TWO OFFICERS THAT DAY AND ANOTHER OFFICER A FEW DAYS LATER. ALL THESE OFFICERS WERE THE BEST OF THE BEST IN ODESSA. YOU KNOW, THEY RAN TOWARD THE GUNFIRE, WHERE OTHER PEOPLE ARE RUNNING AWAY FROM THE GUNFIRE, THEY RAN TOWARD THE GUNFIRE. THEY WERE THERE TO PROTECT THE COMMUNITY. THEY WERE THERE TO HELP THIS LADY FROM ANY FURTHER ABUSE. I THINK THE COMMUNITY NEEDS TO UNDERSTAND THAT WE HAVE OVER A HUNDRED PEOPLE AT THE ODESSA POLICE DEPARTMENT THAT WOULD’NT DO THE SAME THING ON A DAILY BASIS.”

ODESSA POLICE OFFICIALS, STATE REPRESENTATIVE BROOKS LANDGRAF AND CITY OF ODESSA OFFICIALS SPOKE OF THE BRAVERY OF THE THREE FALLEN OFFICERS DURING THIS AFTERNOON’S SOLEMN REMEMBRANCE.

(CHIEF MICHAEL GERKE, ODESSA POLICE DEPARTMENT)

“AGAIN, THE OUT POURING FROM THE COMMUNITY WAS TREMENDOUS AT THAT TIME, AND WE SEE THAT TODAY. A LOT OF OUR SUPPORTERS ARE NOT VERY VOCAL, THEY ARE VERY NUMEROUS, AND WE SEE THEM FROM TIME TO TIME. YOU KNOW, YOU CAN STOP AT A 7-11 JUST TO GET A DRINK, WHILE YOU’RE ON DUTY AND SOMEONE WILL COME UP AND SHAKE YOUR HAND, AND TELL YOU THANK YOU. AND THAT MEANS A LOT TO THESE GUYS.’’

REPRESENTATIVES FROM ODESSA FIRE AND RESCUE, THE US MARSHALS SERVICE, THE MIDLAND SHERIFF’S OFFICE, THE MIDLAND POLICE DEPARTMENT, AND LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCIES FROM THE SURROUNDING COMMUNITIES WERE IN ATTENDANCE AT THE 10 YEAR REMEMBRANCE.
