DRB MEDIA COMMUNICATIONS DIGITAL NEWS-NEWS BRIEF(101817)-MIKE COLLIER, DEMOCRATIC CANDIDATE FOR TEXAS LT. GOVERNOR

MIDLAND, TEXAS/OCTOBER 17, 2017 – MIKE COLLIER, DEMOCRATIC CANDIDATE FOR LT. GOVERNOR OF TEXAS WAS AT THE MIDLAND INTERNATIONAL AIR AND SPACE PORT TO LAUNCH HIS PROPERTY TAX AND EDUCATIONAL REFORM PLANS. HE SAID THAT YOU CAN’T TALK ABOUT PUBLIC EDUCATIONS WITHOUT TALKING ABOUT PROPERTY TAXES.

(MIKE COLLIER, DEMOCRATIC CANDIDATE FOR TEXAS LT. GOVERNOR)

“THE REASON PROPERTY TAXES ARE GOING UP AS THEY ARE IS BECAUSE THE STATE IS WITHDRAWING SUPPORT FOR PUBLIC EDUCTATION, SO DON’T GET MAD AT YOUR LOCAL SCHOOL BOARD. IT’S POLICIES IN AUSTIN THAT RESULTED IN HIGHER PROPERTY TAXES. YOU CAN’T SUSTAIN HIGHER PROPERTY TAXES. WE REALLY NEED TO SEE PROPERTY TAXES GO THE OTHER DIRECTION.”

A FACT THAT APPEARS ON COLLIER FOR LT. GOVERNOR WEBSITE SAYS THAT REPUBLICANS LED BY DAN PATRICK HAVE BEEN USING RUNAWAY PROPERTY TAXES INTENDED FOR PUBLIC SCHOOLS, IS BEING USED FOR CORPORATE TAX BREAKS.

(MIKE COLLIER, DEMOCRATIC CANDIDATE FOR TEXAS LT. GOVERNOR)

“MY JOB AS LT. GOVERNOR, AND I’VE LOOKED AT IT FROM AN ACCOUNTANT PERSPECTIVE, IS TO FIND THE MONEY. AND THE FIRST PLACE WE TURN, IN MY OPINION IS TO CLOSE THE LOOP HOLE, THAT ALLOWS THE OWNERS OF THE LARGEST COMMERCIAL INVESTMENT PROPERTIES, TO UNDERPAY THEIR TAXES AS REQUIRED IN THE TEXAS CONSTITUTION. THE QUANTUM OF WHICH IS ESTIMATED IN 2006 TO BE 4 BILLION DOLLARS A YEAR. INFLATION WOULD SUGGEST AT 5 BILLION A YEAR.”

PROPERTY TAXES WILL INCREASES IN 2018, AND WILL HAVE A MAJOR IMPACT ON PROPERTY OWNERS.

(JOANNA WELLS, ECTOR COUNTY DEMOCRATIC CHAIR)

“I’M A HOME OWNER. I’M WELL AWARE THAT MY PROPERTY TAXES WILL…FOR FISCAL YEAR 2018, HAVE INCREASED 1,500 DOLLARS. MY SALARY IS WHAT IT IS. I AM NOW LOOKING FOR A SECOND JOB, A PART TIME JOB TO BE ABLE TO SUPPLEMENT THAT INCREASE.”

EDUCATION WAS THE SECOND TOPIC OF DISSCUSSION. PEOPLE THAT ATTENDED THIS CAMPAIGN STOP ARE RETIRED TEACHERS, AGREE THAT STANDARDIZED TESTING IS NOT GOOD FOR THE STUDENTS AND PARENTS AND IT HAS A NEGATIVE AFFECT ON OVERALL LEARNING.

(JOANNA WELLS, ECTOR COUNTY DEMOCRATIC CHAIR)

“I THINK MANDATED TESTING OVERALL IS POORLY DONE HERE. I HAVE THREE CHILDREN. MY YOUNGEST IS IN 5TH GRADE AND HE IS ALSO IN A DYSLEXIA PROGRAM. IF HE DOESN’T PASS THE STARR TEST, THEY WILL TRY TO RETAIN HIM IN THE 5TH GRADE.”

(MIKE COLLIER, DEMOCRATIC CANDIDATE FOR TEXAS LT. GOVERNOR)

“WE DO HAVE TO MEASURE, AND ITS SOPHISTICATED STUFF, BUT WHAT I WANT IS THE EDUCATORS TO DECIDE – PEOPLE WHO ACTUALLY TAUGHT, WHO UNDERSTAND HOW EDUCATION WORKS, HOW CHILDREN LEARN, WHICH THE BEST WAYS TO MEASURE PROGRESS. LET THEM REDESIGN THE SYSTEM.”

THOSE IN ATTENDANCE AT THIS CAMPAIGN STOP SEEMED VERY HOPEFUL THAT MIKE COLLIER WILL BE ELECTED DEMOCRATIC TEXAS LT. GOVERNOR, AND BRING CHANGES TO THE PROPERTY TAX AND TO EDUCATION.
