ON MONDAY, OCTOBER 30, 2017, GREG SIMMONS, ECTOR COUNTY COMISSIONER PCT. 2 ANNOUNCED HIS BID FOR RE-ELECTION.

SOME OF THE TOPICS HE TALKED ABOUT DURING HIS ANNOUNCEMENT IS HIS CONSERVITATIVE REPBULICAN VALUES AND HIS APPROACHED TO THE ECTOR COUNTY BUDGET AND OTHER COUNTY EXPENDITURES.

“IN THE PAST TERMS THAT I’VE SERVED, I’VE CONSISTANTLY BEEN A CHECK ON THE SPENDING THAT THE COUNTY GOES IN THROUGH. THE BUDGE CYCLE, I THINK IS MUCH MORE STREAMLINED, AND MORE CONSERVITIVE THAN IT USED TO BE. I JUST HOPE TO CONTINUE THAT ON IN THE NEXT FOUR YEARS, AND CONTINUE TO BE A KIND OF A ‘WATCHDOG’ FOR THE TAX PAYER. PROTECT THEIR INTEREST, AS WELL AS TAKE CARE OF THE COUNTY.”

THE ECTOR COUNTY COMMISSIONERS APPORVED THE RENOVATION, NEW CONSTRUCTION AND IMPROVEMENTS THE ECTOR COUNTY LAW ENFORCEMENT CENTER. THE COUNTY SPENT APPROXIMATELY THREE MILLION DOLLARS THIS YEAR TO HOUSE ECTOR COUNTY INMATES IN OTHER COUNTIES. COMMISSIONER SIMMONS SAYS THAT THE ECONOMY IN ECTOR COUNTY IS STABLEIZING AND IS ENCOURAGED THAT 2018 WILL BE A GOOD YEAR FOR THE COUNTY.

(GREG SIMMONS, ECTOR COUNTY COMMISSIONER PCT 2)

“FIRST OF ALL, THE ECONOMY IS STABLIZED, AND HOPEFULY IT WILL BE BETTER IN 2018, BUT I THINK IT’S A POSITIVE TIME FOR ECTOR COUNTY. WE DO HAVE SOME CONSTRUCTION GOING ON NOW, AT THE BEGINNING, FOR A NEW JAIL EXPANSION, WHICH WILL HELP US REDUCE THE COSTS OF SENDING INMATES OUT OF TOWN FOR KEEPING. AND SO, THAT’S ONE OF THE THINGS WE’RE LOOKING FORWARD TO AND BEING CONSTRUCTION PROCESS ALL THRU 2018.”

A COUNTY SALES TAX IS ON THIS NOVEMBER’S BALLOT. ECTOR COUNTY COMMISSIONER GREG SIMMONS, AND THE OTHER COMMISSIONERS, ARE HOPEFUL THAT THIS COUNTY SALES TAX PASSES.

(GREG SIMMONS, ECTOR COUNTY COMMISSIONER PCT 2)

“THE COUNTY IS ALMOST ENTIRELY DEPENDENT ON PROPERTY TAXES, AND THAT WOULD HELP US DIVERSIFY A LITTLE BIT, HAVE SOME SALES TAX REVENUE OFFSET THE PROPERTY TAXES DURING THE DOWN CYCLES. HOPEFULY IF IT PASSES, THAT WE’RE ABLE TO PASS ON SOME OF THAT SAVINGS TO THE TO THE TAX PAYERS IN THE FORM OF A HOMESTEAD REDUCTION-IN THE PROPERTY TAXES. SO, IT WOULD BE A GOOD STABILIZING FORCE FOR ECTOR COUNTY. AND, ESTIMATES ARE ABOUT 60 PERCENT OF THE REVENUE THAT’S RAISED COME FROM PEOPLE, THAT DON’T ACTUALLY LIVE IN THE AREAS THAT WILL BE COLLECTING THE TAX. IT’S PEOPLE THAT ARE TRANSIENT. EMPLOYEES COMING THRU, WORKING IN THE OILFIELDS. AND SO, IT IS AN OPPORTUNITY TO ACTUALLY SAVE SOME MONEY, POSSIBLY ON THE LOCAL HOME OWNERS.”
