DRB MEDIA COMMUNICATIONS DIGITAL NEWS-NEWS BRIEF(111217)-IMMIGRANT STORIES

ODESSA, TEXAS/NOVEMBER 12, 2017 – “IMMIGRANT STORIES” WAS PRESENTED SATURDAY EVENING, NOVEMBER 11TH BY LOCAL RESIDENTS BRINGING AWARENESS OF THE STRUGGLES AND OF THE COURAGE OF UNDOCUMENTED PERSONS, WHO ARE SEEKING A BETTER WAY OF LIFE.

THERE ARE MANY MYTHS REGARDING THE UNDOCUMENTED IMMIGRANT, SUCH AS NOT PAYING TAXES.

(DEB WILSON, MIDLAND RESIDENT)

“WELL THE THING THAT HIT ME THE MOST WAS, JUST THE DATA AT THE VERY BEGINNING, WAS THAT $13 BILLION DOLLARS IN TAXES COME FROM UNDOCUMENTED ALIENS, THAT DON’T GET THE BENEFIT FROM THEM. THAT SURPRISED ME MORE THAN ANYTHING.”

UNDOCUMENTED IMMIGRANTS CONTRIBUTE TO THE ECONOMY OF THEIR LOCAL COMMUNITIES BY PAYING SALES TAX, WHEN PURCHASING ITEMS AT LOCAL STORES AND EATING AT LOCAL RESTURANTS.

THE CURRENT POLITICAL CLIMATE MAKES A GIANT EFFORT TO DE-HUMANIZE THE UNDOCUMENTED IMMIGRANT.  ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION CONTINUES TO BE “HOT BUTTON” ISSUE.

(REV. EMILY WRIGHT-MAGOON, MINISTER UNITARIAN UNIVERSALIST CHURCH OF MIDLAND)

“I WANTED TO USE MY PRIVILEDGE TO GET THEIR STORY OUT THERE WITH THE HOPE THAT PEOPLE UNDERSTANDING THAT THOSE INDIVIDUALS AFFECTED BY OUR COUNTRY’S IMMIGRATION POLICIES ARE REAL PEOPLE, WHO WORK HARD, WHO HAVE CHILDREN AND DREAMS, AND HOPES.”

(DEB WILSON, MIDLAND RESIDENT)

“IN CONVERSATIONS WITH PEOPLE, I HOPE I CAN SHARE THAT INFORMATION, AND CAN BE MORE AWARE, WHEN MAKING THEIR POLITICAL DECISIONS.”

SATURDAY NIGHT’S PRESENTATION FEATURED SIX IMMIGRANT STORIES: “LIVING ON LOCKDOWN” READ BY EMILY WRIGHT-MAGOON; “DREAMER”, READ BY LYNN ALSUP; “DEAR CHURCH FAMILY & DREAMERS DREAM”, READ BY DR. STAN JACOBS; “POR FAVOR AGUA”, READ BY KAT COPELAND; “MARIA”, READ BY LINDA JORDAN; “LUIS”, READ BY PARKER CLARK.

THERE IS A NEED FOR A BETTER IMMIGRATION POLICY; POLITICANS NEED TO BE MORE COMPASSIONATE, AND UNDERSTANDING TO THE ISSUES THAT FACE THE UNDOCUMENTED.

(ALFREDO CHAPARRO, EVENT COORDINATOR)

“I BELIEVE THAT ELECTED OFFICIALS, SHOULD LISTEN TO THE IMPACT TO FAMILIES, AND MAKE REASONABLE, DIGNIFIED DECISIONS FOR COMPREHENSIVE IMMIGRATION REFORM.”

EVENT PRESENTORS ARE HOPING TO BRING THIS PRESENTATION OF “IMMIGRANT STORIES” TO THE SPAINISH SPEAKING RESIDENTS OF THE PERMIAN BASIN.
