DRB MEDIA COMMUNICATIONS DIGITAL NEWS – NEWS BRIEF(111617) – ODESSA POLICE ACADEMY 15 CRIME SCENE TRAINING

ODESSA, TEXAS/NOVEMBER 16, 2017 – THE RECRUITS OF ACADEMY 15 BEGAN ANOTHER PHASE OF TRAINING. THE RECRUITS LEARNED VARIOUS PROCEDURES AND TECHNIQUES IN CRIME SCENE INVESTIGATION.

DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY MAKES THE EVIDENCE GATHERING MUCH EASIER, BECAUSE THE OFFICER OR INVESTIGATOR CAN TAKE OVER 1000 OF PICTURES OF THE SCENE.

(GEORGIA GUITERREZ, RECRUIT, ACADEMY 15)

“THERE’S LIKE A LIST THAT YOU KIND’VE HAVE TO GO BY, AND YOU HAVE TO GO IN ORDER UNLESS YOU MISS SOMETHING OR YOU MESS SOMETHING UP. I CAN MESS UP THE WHOLE INVESTIGATION.”

THE RECRUITS LEARNED HOW TO USE VARIOUS POWDERS FOR FINGER PRINT GATHERING, AND PULLING THOSE FINGER PRINTS OFF OF DIFFERENT SURFACES FROM THE SCENE.

(LUIS VILLALPANDO, RECRUIT, ACADEMY 15)

“WHEN YOU COME UP ON A CRIME SCENE LIKE THIS, WHERE A PERSON COMMITS SUICIDE OR IT’S A MURDER OR HOMICIDE, YOU KNOW OR WHATEVER THE SCENE IS. IT’S PREPARING US TO, LIKE KNOW WHAT WE HAVE TO DO, YOU KNOW, WHAT TO ACT ON, GETTING OUR SEARCH WARRANTS TO SEARCH THE VEHICLE. FIND THE FINGER PRINTS OF WHO DID IT. WHAT HAPPENED HERE.”

PAT HARRIS, CRIME SCENE TECNICIAN HAS OVER 15 YEARS OF EXPERIENCE, AND PASSES ON HIS KNOWLEDGE AND EXPIENCE TO THE RECRUITS.

(PAT HARRIS, OPD CRIME SCENE TECHNICIAN)

“YOU KNOW, YOU GO THROUGH THE BASICS: BE SURE TO WEAR YOUR GLOVES. YOU KNOW, JUST, COMMON SENSE THINGS. YOU DON’T WANT TO LEAVE YOUR DNA OR YOUR PRINTS AT THE SCENE. YOU KNOW. JUST BE CAUTIOUS AS YOU GO IN, YOU KNOW. THERE ARE TIMES THEY HAVE TO KICK EVIDENCE, ‘CAUSE YOU HAVE TO GET IN TO SECURE A SCENE OR WHATEVER, THEN BACK OUT AND RE-THINK ABOUT IT, YOU KNOW. YEAH, YOU COULD MAKE MISTAKES. IT HAPPENS. WE’RE HUMAN.”
