ODESSA, TEXAS/DECEMBER 28, 2017 – BETO O’ROURKE, U.S. DEMOCRATIC CONGRESSAN FOR THE 16TH DISTRICT AND CANDIDATE FOR U.S. SENATE HELD A TOWN HALL MEETING IN ODESSA AT THE GERTRUED BRUCE HISTORICAL CULTURAL CENTER. VARIOUS TOPICS WERE DISCUSSED INCLUDING EMPLOYMENT, HEALTHCARE AND IMMIGRATIONS.

IN THE STATE OF TEXAS THERE ARE APPROXIMATLEY 200,000 DREAMERS. CONGRESSMAN O’ROURKE SAYS IT’S VERY IMPORTANT TO PASS THE DREAM ACT PROTECTING THE CHILDREN OF UNDOCUMENTED PARENTS, WHO BROUGHT THEM TO THE U.S. ILLEGALLY.

“IF WE DON’T PASS THE DREAM ACT, WHICH INSURES THAT THEY CAN STAY HERE IN OUR COMMUNITIES IN OUR STATE AND IN OUR COUNTRY, WE ARE GOING TO LOSE THEM FOREVER, TO OTHER COUNTRIES, OTHER PARTS OF THE WORLD AND WE’LL LOSE THE OPPORTUNITY THAT THEY PRESENT TO THE UNITED STATES, SO WE GOT TO PASS THE DREAM ACT, AND THE ONLY WAY TO DO THAT IS TO WORK WITH REPUBLICANS AND DEMOCRATS ALIKE.”

CONGRESSMAN O’ROURKE SAYS THAT EVERYONE SHOULD HAVE THE AVAILABILITY TO GET HEALTHCARE, TO SEE A DOCTOR AND TO GET MEDICATIONS ALL AT A REASONABLE COST, IF NOT THIS COULD CAUSE A NEGATIVE AFFECT IN THE COMMUNITY AND LOCAL ECONOMY.

THE TOWN HALL MEETING WAS FULL TO CAPACITY WITH STANDING ROOM ONLY.  MANY OF THE ATTENDEES EXPRESSED HOPE THAT BETO O’ROURKE WILL BE THE NEW DEMOCRATIC U.S. SENATOR, DISTRICT 16.

JOANNA WELLS, DEMOCRATIC CHAIR FOR ECTOR COUNTY SAYS THAT WITHIN A TWO – YEAR SPAN THERE HAS BEEN AN INCREASE IN DEMOCRATIC VOTERS IN THE COUNTY.

“THE DEMOCRATIC VOTE GREW THREE PERCENT HERE IN ECTOR. AND WHAT’S INTERESTING ABOUT THAT IS, THAT IT’S NOT NECESSERALY NEW POPULATION, THEY ARE SIFFENING OFF FROM THE REPUBLICAN SIDE OF IT; THEY’RE GOING THIRD PARTY OR THEY’RE VOTING DEMOCRAT.”
