DRB MEDIA COMMUNICATIONS DIGITAL NEWS-TRAINING FOR LAW ENFORCEMENT HOSTED BY H2i ECTOR COUNTY COALITION

ODESSA, TEXAS/AUGUST 22, 2017 – ON TUESDAY, AUGUST 22, 2017 THE H2i ECTOR COUNTY COALITION ALSO KNOWN AS THE HERE 2 IMPACT COALITION HOSTED A FOUR CLASSROOM AND HANDS-ON TRAINING SESSION FOR LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS TO SAFELY DISPERSE UNDER AGE DRINKING PARTIES.

(CORPORAL STEVE LeSUEUR, PUBLIC INFORMATION OFFICER, ODESSA POLICE DEPARTMENT)

“IN THE PAST IF IT’S FOUND THAT AN ADULT IS FURNISHING ALCOHOL TO A MINOR, THEY COULD BE ARRESTED FOR FURNISHING ALCOHOL TO A MINOR, WHICH IS A CLASS B MISDEMEANOR.”

THE ODESSA CITY COUNCIL PASSED THE SOCIAL HOST ACCOUNTABILITY ORDINANCE. THIS ORDIANCE PLACES ACCOUNTABILITY AND A HEAVY FINE ON THE ADULT, WHO HOSTS AND UNDERAGE DRINKING PARTY, EITHER IN THEIR HOMES OR ON PROPERTY THE ADULT OWNES.

(BRIAN LEMONS, TEXAS STANDING TALL, AUSTIN, TEXAS)

“IT’S REALLY INSPIRING TO SEE CITY LEADERSHIP ON ALL SIDES: THE MAYOR’S OFFICE, THE CITY ATTONERY’S OFFICE, AND THE POLICE DEPARTMENT TAKING THE PROBLEM OF UNDERAGE DRINKING SERIOUSLY AND TAKING SERIOUS STEPS TO IMPROVE THE COMMUNITY OF ODESSA.”

ACCORDING THE 2016 REGIONAL NEEDS ASSESSMENT, UNDERAGE DRINKING IS A WIDESPREAD HEATH PROBLEM.

(SARA TOMLINSON, Here 2 impact(H2i) ECTOR COUNTY COALITION COORDINATOR)

“WE’RE SEEING SO MANY UNDERAGE DRINKING, WHICH LEADS TO SO MUCH MORE STD’S, UNWANTED PREGNANCIES, VIOLENCE, AND SCHOOL TRUENCY.”

THE GOAL OF THE H2i COALITION IS TO EDUCATE PARENTS TO BE PARENTS AND NOT JUST BE A FRIEND OR A COOL PARENT THAT ALLOWS UNDERAGE DRINKING IN THEIR HOMES.

(SARA TOMLINSON, Here 2 impact (H2i) ECTOR COUNTY COALITION COORDINATOR)

“OUR SLOGAN IS IF YOU ENABLE MINORS TO DRINK, YOU’RE DISABILING THEM TO THINK. IT IS NOT OK TO HOST UNDER AGE DRINKING PARTIES.”

THE TRAINING IS PROVIDED BY TEXAS STANDING TALL OUT OF AUSTIN, TEXAS IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE TEXAS DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION AND THE CURRICULUM IS ESTABLISHED BY THE TEXAS ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGE COMMISSION.

SB: (BRIAN LEMONS, STRATEGIST, TEXAS STANDING TALL, AUSTIN, TEXAS)

“THESE TRAININGS HAVE SHOWN EVIDENCE IN STUDIES OF BEING A SUCCESSFUL WAY OF REDUCING UNDER AGE DRINKING.”

STUDENTS FROM MIDLAND SCHOOL DISTRICT PARTICIPATED AS UNDER AGE DRINKERS IN THE “CONTROLED PARTY DISPERSAL” TRAINING AT THE ODESSA POLICE DEPARTMENT. THE SIMULATION HAD AN IMPACT ON PARTICIPATING STUDENTS.

(JAOEN SOUNG, 11TH GRADE, MIDLAND LEE HIGH SCHOOL)

“I THINK HOW IT EDUCATED US WAS; IF YOU DO UNDER AGE DRINK, YOUR LIFE COULD BE RUINED

LIKE A LOT OF OPPORTUNITIES WILL BE THROWN OUT THE WINDOW, BECAUSE YOU MESSED UP.”

ANOTHER STUDENT STATED A LOSS OF RESPECT OF FRIENDS AND FAMILY.

(FRANKIE FLORES, 11TH GRADE, MIDLAND LEE HIGH SCHOOL)

“IT’S DISRESPECTFUL TO THE ENVIRONMENT, AND DISRESPECTFUL TO THE POLICE, AND DISRESPECTFUL TO YOURSELF, TO YOUR BODY.”
