DRB MEDIA COMMUNICATIONS DIGITAL NEWS(041618) – OPD ACADEMY 16 DRIVING TRAINING

ODESSA, TEXAS/APRIL 16, 2018 – THE ODESSA POLICE DEPARTMENT’S POLICE ACADEMY SESSION 16 HELD THE DRIVING PORTION OF THEIR TRAINING. THE CADETS TRAIN IN MANURVERING TECNIQUES IN PRUSIT SITUATION AND RUN THOUGH SIMULATIONS THAT OFFICERS MAY ENCOUNTER WHILE PATROLING THE STREETS.

(CORPORAL MIKE HAMILTON, COMMUNITY RELATIONS, ODESSA POLICE DEPARTMENT)

“YOU HAVE TO DO NIGHT DRIVING. TURN YOUR LIGHTS ON. YOU’RE DRIVING THE COURSE WITH YOUR LIGHTS ON. IT’S ANOTHER LITTLE DISTRACTION THAT YOU HAVE TO HIT, BECAUSE SOMETIMES YOU HAVE TO DO THAT WHEN YOU’RE A POLICE OFFICER.”

THERE IS SOME APREHENSION WHEN THE CADETS BEGIN DRIVING. THIS MAY BE BECAUSE OF THE EXPENSE OF THE POLICE VEHICLE. BY REMOVING THAT CONCERN FROM THE CADET’S THINKING IT INCREASES THE SUCCESS RATE OF DRIVING TRAINING.

(CORPORAL MIKE HAMILTON, COMMUNITY RELATIONS, ODESSA POLICE DEPARTMENT)

“WE HAVE A PRETTY GOOD SUCCESS RATE. EVERYBODY GET THROUGH. AND IT TAKES TIME SOMETIMES. WE SPEND THE WHOLE WEEK OUT HERE, AND THEY GO PORTION BY PORTION AND THEY PUT IT ALL TOGHETHER AT THE END OF THE WEEK.”

THERE ARE A SET NUMBER OF HOURS THAT THE CADETS NEED FOR THE COMPLETION OF THE DRIVING POTION OF THE TRAINING. THE GOAL IS TO FEEL COMFORTABLE WITH THE POLICE VEHICLE AND REDUCE THE AMOUT OF ERRORS THAT THE OFFICE MAY MAKE IN REAL LIFE SITUATIONS.

(CORPORAL MIKE HAMILTON, COMMUNITY RELATIONS, ODESSA POLICE DEPARTMENT)

“THEY’RE GOING OVER HOW THE VEHICLE ACTUALLY WORKS. THE VEHICLES ARE EXPENSIVE, BUT THEY’RE MADE FOR IT, YOU KNOW. WE HAVE TO PUSH THESE CARS TO THEIR LIMIT SOMETIMES.”
