DRB MEDIA COMMUNICATIONS DIGITAL NEWS(041818) – 2ND JOINT MEETING OF ECTOR COUNTY & CITY OF ODESSA-NEW COURTHOUSE

ECTOR COUNTY/ODESSA, TEXAS/APRIL 17, 2018 – THE ECTOR COUNTY COMMISSIONERS AND MEMBERS OF THE ODESSA CITY COUNCIL HELD THEIR SECOND MEETING TO DISCUSS AND CREATE A COMMITTEE TO BEGIN SETTING GOALS FOR THE NEW COURTHOUSE PROJECT.

(EDDY SHELTON, ECTOR COUNTY COMMISSIONER, PCT. 1)

“AS A COMMITTEE WE’RE GOING TO SIT DOWN AND SAY OK NOW, ‘WHAT OUR OBJECTIVE HERE?’. THE OBJECTIVE IS TO FIND THE BEST POSSIBLE BANG FOR OUR BUCK. WE KNOW THAT WE NEED A COURTHOUSE. WE DON’T HAVE TO RESEARCH THE VIABILITY OF OUR EXISTING COURTHOUSE, THAT’S ALREADY BEEN DONE. WE’VE HAD SEVERAL STUDIES ON THE COURTHOUSE, SO WE KNOW WHAT WE NEED.”

THE NEW COURTHOUSE PROJECT COMMITTEE ARE: FOR THE CITY OF ODESSA, COUNCIL MEMBER DISTRICT 2, DEWEY BRYANT; CITY COUNCIL MEMBER DISTRICT 1, MALCOLM HAMILTON. FOR ECTOR COUNTY: EDDY SHELTON, ECTOR COUNTY COMMISSIONER, PCT 1 AND DALE CHILDERS ECTOR COUNTY COMMISSIONER, PCT. 3.

(JUDGE RON ECKERT, ECTOR COUNTY JUDGE)

“THIS WILL BE, BASICALLY A FACT- FINDING COMMITTEE COMPOSED OF A COUPLE CITY COUNCILMEN, TWO COMMISSIONERS AND JUDGE TROTTER, YOU KNOW, THE SENIOR ADMINISTRATIVE JUDGE FOR ECTOR COUNTY, AND THEY’RE GOING TO GO OUT AND RESEARCH, TRYING TO GET SOME INFORMATION ON VARIOUS PARTICULARS RELATING TO THE COURTHOUSE PROJECT.”

THE PRIMARY LOCATION TO BUILD THE NEW COURTHOUSE IS AT THE CURRENT COURTHOUSE LOCATION. OTHER LOCATIONS ARE ALSO BEING CONSIDERED.

(JUDGE RON ECKERT, ECTOR COUNTY JUDGE)

“WHAT WE WILL BE ABLE TO SHOW THE PUBLIC, EVENTUALLY IS NOT ONLY A LOCATION, ‘CAUSE WE DO HAVE A LOCATION IN MIND SELECTED, BUT HOPEFULLY, EVENTUALLY WE’LL BE ABLE TO SHOW THEM A RENDERING SOME KIND OF VISUAL.”

A OBSTACLE THAT THE NEW COURTHOUSE COMMITTEE MUST RESOLVE THE MUCH-NEEDED PARKING FOR THE GENERAL PUBLIC AND FOR EMPLOYESS AND STAFF.

(EDDY SHELTON, ECTOR COUNTY COMMISSIONER, PCT. 1)

“WHAT WE DON’T KNOW IS WHERE OUR PARKING IS GOING TO BE. BECAUSE, WE HAVE LAND AQUISITIONS WE HAVE TO DO. SO, YOU KNOW, WE HAVE ENOUGH LAND CURRENTLY IF WE GO WITH A PARKING STRUCTURE, BUT YOU KNOW, IT’S MORE EXPENSIVE. SO, YOU KNOW, WE’RE TRYING TO LOOK AT BUYING OTHER PROPERTIES FOR SURFACE LEVEL PARKING VS. USING OUR EXISTING PROPERTIES FOR A PARKING STRUCTURE.”

THE ECTOR COUNTY COMMISSIONERS AND THE ODESSA CITY COUNCIL AGREE THAT WORKING TOGETHER WILL BENEFIT THE TAXPAYER.

(JUDGE RON ECKERT, ECTOR COUNTY JUDGE)

“BOTH CITY AND COUNTY START WITH THE LETTER ‘C’ AND END WITH THE LETTER ‘Y’. SO, DOES THE WORD ‘COMMUNITY’. SO, WE NEED TO START THINKING ABOUT THIS AS A COMMUNITY THING, THAT’S WHY WE’RE BOTH HERE.”

THE COURTHOUSE COMMITTEE IS SCHEDULED TO MEET THURSDAY OR FRIDAY OF THIS WEEK.
