ODESSA, TEXAS/MAY 23, 2018 – ON TUESDAY, MAY 22ND VOLUNTEERS FROM THE ODESSA POLICE DEPARTMENT AND OFFICERS FROM EL PASO AND ACROSS WEST TEXAS GATHERED AT THE CORNER OF 3RD STREET AND NORTH GOLDER FOR THE LAW ENFORCEMENT TORCH RUN.

“WE LEFT SUNDAY MORNING AT 11, EL PASO TIME, MOUNTAIN TIME AND WE’VE BEEN ON THE ROAD EVER SINCE RUNNING. MORNING, DAY, NIGHT.”

THE LAW ENFORCEMENT TORCH RUN IS SPECIAL OLYMPICS’ LARGEST GRASSROOTS FUND-RAISER AND PUBLIC AWARENESS CAMPAIGN. THE ODESSA POLICE DEPARTMENT HAS REPRESENTED THE SPECIAL OLYMPICS AND THE TORCH RUN FOR OVER 25 YEARS.

“EVERYBODY SEEMS TO PUT MORE FOCUS ON THE OLYMPICS, THAN, YOU KNOW THE SPECIAL OLYMPICS FOR THESE SPECIAL KIDS. IT SEEMS THAT, YOU KNOW, THEY’RE KIND’OF FORGOTTEN ABOUT. SO, AS FOR LAW ENFORCEMENT WE LIKE TO COME TOGETHER AND DO THIS FOR THEM.”

THE TORCH RUN RAISES FUNDS THROUGH MERCHANDISE SALES, DONATIONS, PLEDGES FOR RUNNERS AND CORPORATE DONTAIONS AS WELL AS SPECIAL EVENTS. IN 2017, TEXAS TORCH RUNNERS FROM ACROSS THE STATE RAISED APPROXIMATELY $3 MILLION DOLLARS FOR SPECIAL OLYMPICS.
