Survey for Lubbock District project

TxDOT is working on plans for proposed improvements to US 62/385 in the city of Seminole and we’d like your input. Taking the survey (link below) will allow you to provide us your thoughts on three proposed route options and what you see as the area’s transportation priorities. Your input will allow us to move forward with plans best-suited for the roadway and the business community. The survey will be live Jan. 25 — March 1.

A virtual public meeting providing additional information, and an opportunity to ask TxDOT staff questions about the proposed project, will be held February 11. Please share this email with those in your organization who you think would be interested in providing their input. Feel free to reach out to the Lubbock District Public Information Officer Dianah Ascencio, (806) 748-4472 or Dianah.Ascencio@txdot.gov if you have any questions.

Board President’s Vision: A Premier Academic District Trustee Seeks to Attract and Retain the Best

Bryan Murry

January 25, 2021 — As part of School Board Recognition Month, Midland ISD is individually recognizing members of its Board of Trustees and the crucial role they play in our communities and schools.

Bryan Murry, the board’s current president, was elected as a trustee in 2016 and represents District 7, which is generally located in northwest Midland. He is deeply focused on improving public education.

“Public education is a reflection of the community, and the community is a reflection of public education,” Murray said. “I want the best quality of life for all of us that are proud to call Midland home. In order to attract the best opportunities, we have to place a high importance on our public education.”

Murry’s vision for MISD is to become one of the premier academic districts in the state of Texas. “We will promote a healthy, supportive culture that will, in turn, attract the best teachers and principals,” he said.

Community service, particularly in education, has long been important to Murry. He is past President of the Greathouse Elementary PTA, former President of the Midland Council of PTAs and is a lifetime member of the Texas PTA. He has served on two school bond committees, an elementary school-naming committee and an Executive Director of Athletics selection committee. He is also a former President and Treasurer of the Lee High School Football Booster Club; and Treasurer of the Lee High School Baseball Booster Club. He has also served on the board of the Greater Midland Football League.

Murry, who is originally from Odessa, is a graduate of Leadership Odessa and is active in the Midland and Odessa communities, having served as Treasurer of Permian Basin Child’s Play and as President, Vice President and Treasurer of the Ellen Noël Art Museum.

He is a 1988 graduate of Permian High School and in 1985 was the Odessa Teenager of the Year. He earned his Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting from West Texas State (now West Texas A&M) in 1992 and received his CPA license in 1994. Murry is currently the Controller at III N Investments, where he has been employed since 2000. He previously worked in public accounting and at an oil and gas company.

Murry is married to Amy Murry, a teacher who has worked as an educator for more than 25 years. She teaches fourth grade at Fasken Elementary. They attend Stonegate Fellowship. Murry has three sons: Bryson, Brock and Britton — all of whom are Lee High School graduates. His stepdaughter, Lyndi, attends Abell Junior High.

Midland College Adult Education and Literacy program awarded “Best in Class”

#StartStriveSucceed
On Thursday, January 21, The Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) announced that Midland College’s
(MC) Adult Education and Literacy program has been named a “Best in Class” award winner for
program year 2019-2020. The award will be presented in a virtual session on February 10 during the
Texas Association of Literacy and Adult Education (TALAE) state conference.
“I am so proud of our entire Adult Education and Literacy staff and teachers who work tirelessly to
deliver quality services to our Permian Basin students,” Dale Beikirch, MC dean of Adult and Continuing
Education said. “The COVID pandemic caused Program Year 2019-2020 to be an especially hard year
for everyone, and I thank the TWC’s Office of Adult Education and Literacy for their support and
guidance throughout the year. I am honored and looking forward to accepting this award for Midland
College.”
The “Best in Class” award is a performance-driven, quality award focusing on meeting targeted
measures, such as skills gained, credentials achieved and enrollment goals met. The Midland College
Adult Education and Literacy program is one of only six throughout the state receiving this award. The
award recognizes the accomplishments of the program from July 1, 2019 through June 30, 2020.
The MC Adult and Education Literacy program encompasses high equivalency preparation (GED®)
classes and English as a Second Language (ESL) classes. The MC employee team consists of
Beikirch who has oversight of the program, Luisa Nail, ESL coordinator; Shana Hannsz, GED®
coordinator; Monique Hereford, Adult Education and Literacy secretary; and Daisy DeLucas, Adult
Education and Literacy grant accountant.
“For almost 50 years, the adult education program at Midland College has played a significant role in
educating the populace of the Permian Basin,” Dr. Damon Kennedy, MC vice president of Instructional
Services said. “Now, perhaps more than ever, is the time to provide opportunities to everyone, and
Midland College is proud to do so through programs such as Adult Education and Literacy. Each year,
our classes in this program serve more than 1,000 Midland residents and help them acquire the skills
needed to earn a high school diploma and succeed in college and the workforce. Students in these
classes are usually those who are considered nontraditional college students; however, their passion
for learning is as strong as those who have taken more traditional college paths. This passion, coupled
with a drive to succeed, is a direct result of the excellent instruction they had in Adult Education and
Literacy classes.”
