ODESSA, TEXAS/AUGUST 28, 2021-ECTOR COUNTY ISD HELD A SPECIAL SCHOOL BOARD MEETING ON THURSDAY, AUGUST 26TH, TO VOTE ON A RESOLUTION TO IMPLEMENT A TEMPORARY MASK MANDATE FOR STUDENTS, TEACHERS AND STAFF. APPROXIMATELY 32 PERSONS VOICED THEIR OPINIONS FOR OR AGAINST THE TEMPORARY MASK MANDATE DURING THE PUBLIC HEARING PORTION OF THE MEETING.

THOSE THAT WERE AGAINST THE TEMPORARY MASK MANDATE BELIEVE THAT THE RESOLUTION VIOLATES THEIR CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS AND THE RIGHT TO CHOOSE.

MEDICAL OFFICIALS WITH ORMC, MEDICAL CENTER HOSPITAL AND THE ECTOR COUNTY HEALTH AUTHORITY PRESENTED COVID-19/DELTA VARIANT DATA TO THE SCHOOL BOARD AND TO PERSONS ATTENDING THE MEETING.

SUPPORTERS OF THE ECISD TEMPORARY MASK MANDATE ARE CONCERED THAT CHILDREN IN SCHOOL COULD BE PASSING THE COVID-19 VIRUS TO OTHERS.

A STUDENT AT PERMIAN HIGH SCHOOL EXPRESSED HIS FEAR TO THE ECISD SCHOOL BOARD OF BEING IN SCHOOL WITH OTHER STUDENTS WHO HAVE COVID.

ECTOR COUNTY ISD APPROVED A MASK REQUIREMENT SHORTLY AFTER THE SCHOOL BOARD RETURNED FROM EXECUTIVE SESSION. HOWEVER, DURING THE AFTERNOON HOURS ON THURSDAY, AUGUST 26TH, THE TEXAS SUPREME COURT SIDED WITH TEXAS GOVERNOR GREG ABBOTT’S EXECUTIVE ORDER BANNING MASK MANDATES IN TEXAS SCHOOL DISTRICTS.

ECTOR COUNTY ISD IS WORKING WITH LOCAL ELECTED OFFICIALS IN THE TEXAS HOUSE AND SENATE TO WRITE LEGISLATION THAT WOULD EMPOWER THE DISTRICT TO MAKE DECISIONS THAT AFFECT THE LOCAL SCHOOLS.
