DRB MEDIA COMMUNICATIONS DIGITAL NEWS(1102020)-ODESSA FIRE RESCUE RESPOND TO CHEMICAL WAREHOUSE FIRE

ODESSA, TEXAS/JANUARY 10, 2020-ON FRIDAY, JANUARY 10TH AT APPROXIMATELY 10:38AM A LARGE COMMERCIAL STRUCTURE FIRE ERUPTED AT A CHEMICAL WAREHOUSE AT 67TH AND ANDREWS HIGHWAY IN NORTH ODESSA. THERE ARE NO WATER SOURCES IN THIS SECTION OF ODESSA, WHICH IS IN NORTH ECTOR COUNTY. ODESSA FIRE RESCUE HAD WATER BROUGHT IN FROM THE SOUTH ECTOR COUNTY VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENT AND THE WEST ODESSA VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENTS. (ROD HUBER, ASSISTANT FIRE CHIEF/EMS CHIEF-ODESSA FIRE RESCUE) “WHEN WE ARRIVED ON SCENE WE HAD A FULLY ENVOLVED STRUCTURE FIRE WITH A KNOW HAZ-MAT. WE DO HAVE SOME ACIDIC ACID, AND MANY MANY OTHER HAZZARDOUS MATERIALS THAT WAS IN THE WAREHOUSE.” DIRT TRUCKS FROM THE CITY OF ODESSA ARRIVED AT SCENE WITH SAND AND DIRT TO HELP CONTAIN THE CHEMICAL AND WATER RUN-OFF. GOVERNMENTAL AGENCIES WERE NOTIFIED OF THE STRUCTURE-CHEMICAL FIRE. (ROD HUBER, ASSISTANT FIRE CHIEF/EMS CHIEF-ODESSA FIRE RESCUE) “SO ONCE ODESSA FIRE RESCUE AND THE EMERGENCY RESPONSE IS OVER, THEN THEY WILL CALL IN THE RAILROAD COMMISSION, TCDEQ, ALL THE GOVERNMENTAL AGENCIES HAVE BEEN NOTIFIED, AND THEY WILL CONTRACT WITH THE CLEAN-UP CREW TO COME DO SOME DIRT REMEDIATION.” A SHELTER IN PLACE WAS ACTIVATED BY THE CITY OF ODESSA FOR RESIDENTS AND BUSINESSES THAT WERE IN CLOSE PROXIMITY TO THE FULLY ENGULFED CHEMICAL WAREHOUSE. (ALFRED KNAPP, RESIDENT LIVING NEAR THE CHEMICAL WAREHOUSE) “I CAME OUT AND LOOKED AT IT, AND THEN, UH, I WENT DOWN AND TOOK SOME PICTURES OF IT, AND UH. THEN, THEN I TEND TO COME HERE SO I CAN GET OUT OF THE SMOKE FUMES AND STUFF, ‘CAUSE WE DON’T KNOW WHAT KIND OF CHEMICALS ARE IN THERE, EVENTHOUGH THEY’RE SAYING THEY’RE SAFE.” A SECTION OF 67TH STREET WAS CLOSED AND BLOCKED OFF WITH STREET SIGNS AND BARRIERS FORCING ODESSA FIRE RESCUE AND OTHER EMERGENCY VEHICLES TO TAKE A DIFFERENT ROUTE (ALFRED KNAPP, RESIDENT LIVING NEAR THE CHEMICAL WAREHOUSE) “FIRE DEPARTMENTS’ BEEN GOING DOWN ON ANDREWS HIGHWAY THINKING THEY COULD CUT IN ON 67TH AND COME TO THE FIRE, BECAUSE THE COUNTY WENT IN THERE AND CLOSED THE ROAD, BECAUSE OF THE WATER DAMAGE TO IT AND EVERYTHING, AND THEY DID’NT WANNA, EVIDENTLY THEY DID’NT WANT TO FIX IT. SO NOW, THE ONLY WAY IN IS TO COME DOWN STEVENSON STREET, OR AND AH, TO GET TO THE CHEMICAL PLACE.” A MEMBER OF THE ODESSA FIRE RESCUE WAS INJURED AND WAS TRANSPORTED TO MEDICAL CENTER HOSPITAL. NO REPORT OF ANY OTHER INJUIES. FOR DRB MEDIA COMMUNICATIONS DIGITAL NEWS, DANNY BARRERA.
