THE CELEBRATION FEATURED SINGING AND GUEST SPEAKER REV. WINDSOR ARCHIE, PASTOR OF THE ROSE OF SHARON CHURCH LOCATED ON EAST MURPHY IN ODESSA. (Jo ANN DAVENPORT-LITTLETON, EVENT ORGANIZER) “OUR THEME THIS YEAR IS ‘KEEP MOVING FORWARD.’ YOU KNOW, ALONG THIS JOURNEY WE RUN INTO MANY OBSTICLES AND MANY HURDLES WE HAVE TO CLIMB TRY TO COVER, BUT WE’VE GOTTA KEEP MOVING FORWARD. AND IF DOCTOR KING WAS LIVING HE WOULD TELL US, ‘KEEP MOVING FORWARD’, DON’T LET NOTHING DETER YOUFROM YOUR DREAM, AND WITH EVERYTHING THAT IS HAPPENING NOW-A-DAYS, WE GET KIND’OF WEARY AND WE FEEL LIKE THROWING IN THE TOWEL. BUT WE CAN’T, WE’VE GOT TO KEEP MOVING FORWARD.” THE MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. EVENT HELD THE YEARLY MARCH THAT BEGAN AT THE SAL GUERRERO SOUTHSIDE COMMUNITY CENTER PARKING LOT UP SOUTH DIXIE BLVD TO EAST MURPHY STREET TO THE WOODSON PARK. (GENE COLLINS, PRESIDENT OF THE ODESSA NAACP) “I AM MARCHING, REALLY, SYMBOLICALLY OF THE STRUGGLES THAT WE’VE HAD AS AFICAN AMERICANS. OF, AH, JIM CROWE ALLTHE WAY TO THE PRESENT TIME FOR CIVIL RIGHTS. COMMEMORATING THE LIFE OF A GREAT MAN, A GREAT PREACHER, A CREAT CIVIL RIGHTS LEADER, A GREAT VISIONARY, WHO HAS SHOWN THIS COUNTRY A BETTER WAY TO ENTERACT WITH EACH OTHER SO THAT WE CAN ALL FULFILL OUR GOD GIVEN MISSIONS IN LIFE.” PARENTS AND THEIR CHILDREN, LOCAL SCHOOL ORGANIZATIONS AND MEMBERS OF THE PERMIAN HIGH SCHOOL FOOTABALL TEAM HELD SIGNS AND PICTURES OF MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. THIS DAY IS AN IMPORTANT DAY FOR THE OLD AND FOR THE YOUNG (GENE COLLINS, PRESIDENT OF THE ODESSA NAACP) “RIGHT BEHIND THE MINISTERS WERE ALOT OF YOUNG PEOPLE. IT SEEMED LIKE THEY WERE MARCHING A LITTLE BIT FASTER THAN US. AND AT FIRST, I SAID IT MIGHT MAY BE TIME FOR US TO MOVE OUT OF THE WAY AND LE THEM TAKE OVER. BUT, I THINK IT’S IMPORTANT THAT WE SET A GOOD EXAMPLE FOR THEM BASED ON THE PRINCIPLES THAT WE WERE TAUGHT, THE PRINCPLES THAT CAME FROM OUR TIME IN SUNDAY SCHOOL, IN THE EARLY SCHOOLS, THE EXPERIENCES THAT WE HAD, AND THEM KNOW THAT THERE MAY BE STRUGGLES IN LIFE, BUT TO ACHIEVE WHAT THEY CAN ACHIEVE IS WORTH THE STUGGLE.” THE COMMOM MESSAGE AMONG THOSE THAT GATHERED AT THE MLK EVENT IS THAT OF LOVE, COMPASSION AND COMMUNICATING WITH EACH OTHER WITHOUT HATE.
