ODESSA, TEXAS/FEBRUARY 2, 2020-THE CITY OF ODESSA PARKS AND RECREATION DEPARTMENT HOSTED THE THIRD ANNUAL BBQ-COOKOFF AT THE ECTOR COUNTY COLISEUM FRIDAY AND SATURDAY, JANUARY 31ST & FEBRUARY 1ST. IT IS THE FIRST YEAR TO BE AT THE COLISEUM AND THE FIRST YEAR TO BE A SANCTIONED EVENT (CORI BRANSCUM, RECREATION AND SPECIAL EVENTS COORDINATOR-CITY OF ODESSA PARKS AND RECREATION DEPARTMENT) “WE’VE GOT AN ‘IBCA’ SANCTION, WHICH IS THE INTERNATIONAL BBQ COOKERS ASSOCIATION, AND UH THERE ARE 3 MAIN MEATS ARE: CHICKEN, RIBS AND BRISQUET.” ON FRIDAY, COMPETITORS ARRIVED AND FOUND THEIR LOCATIONS ON THE COLISEUM GROUNDS TO SET UP AND START THE PARTY ATMOSPHER, MEETING OTHER TEAM COMPETITORS, AND BEGIN PREPARING FOR THE SATURDAY COMPETION. (KEN BAUCHAM, COMPETITOR) “YOU MEET NEW PEOPLE. UH, YOU KIND’A GET TA GET AWAY FROM REALITY FOR A LITTLE BIT AND JUST ENJOY, ENJOY THE WEEKEND, AND AND ENJOY FRIENDS, AND HOPEFULLY GET A PRIZE FOR THE BEST MEAT(LAUGHTER).” KEN BAUCHAM, A COMPETITOR AT THE COOK-OFF WAS INSPIRED BY HIS FATHER TO START COOKING BBQ. (KEN BAUCHAM, COMPETITOR) “MY DAD IS A BIG INFLUENCE WHY I STARTED COOKING. HE OWNES A BBQ BUSINESS IN TERLINGUA, TEXAS, AND HE’S COOKED ALL HIS LIFE AND INFLUENCED ME ON START’IN EXPERIMENT ON COOKING MEATS AND SO, ‘CAUSE OF HIM I DECIDED TO ENTER COOK-OFFS AND, AND UH TRYIN’ TO PERFECT AND DO AND DO UH AS GOOD AS HE CAN.” APPRXOMATELY 50-60 TEAMS REGISTERED FOR THE 3RD ANNUAL BBQ COOK-OFF. THE AWARDS WERE PRESENTED AT 4:30PM ON SATURDAY AT THE ECTOR COUNTY COLISEUM. (CORI BRANSCUM, RECREATION AND SPECIAL EVENTS COORDINATOR-CITY OF ODESSA PARKS AND RECREATION DEPARTMENT) “WE’RE PASSING OUT SOME MONEY THIS YEAR. AND UH, FIRST PLACE IS GOING TO TAKE HOME, OR OVER ALL FIRST PLACE IS GOING TO TAKE HOME THE 1500; AND 2ND PLACE OVER ALL IS GOING TAKE 900; AND THE REST OF THE 5000 TOTAL WILL SPLIT OFF BETWEEN THE TOP 5 IN EACH CATEGORY. THE 3RD ANNUAL BBQ COOK-OFF HAD A GREAT TURN-OUT AND PARKS AND RECREATION DEPARTMENT IS GEARING UP FOR NEXT YEAR’S ANNUAL BBQ COOK-OFF EVENT.
